Shilpo Shahor Shapnolok (The Happiest People in the World) is a powerful visual journey that shows how the filmmaker reconnects with four of his old friends in the chaotic city of Dhaka.
Filmmaker Shaheen Dill-Riaz, after 10 years of his stay in Germany, traveled in 2003 to his hometown Dhaka – the capital of the alleged paradise and hell.
His project initiated when German writer Sybille Berg heard about a survey by Prof. Worchester of the London School of Economics in 1998. According to him the happiest people in the world lived in Bangladesh. Germany, on the other hand, ranked only 42nd out of the 54 countries surveyed. Sybille Berg traveled to Bangladesh in search of happiness and described her findings in an open letter to the professor of the British survey in a German magazine. Her unflattering conclusion: Life in Bangladesh is a living hell.
